I always end up liking the book(s) better than the movie, even in the few instances that I actually like a movie that is based on the book. So why do I see movies based on books? The Golden Compass has a special spot in my memories and I haven't hear anything really good about the movie from people who read the books. So maybe I should just pass. I heard they played down the interesting religious aspects and character/plot development in favor of longer, more violent battle scenes from more than one person. That's poop.

I have no opinion about The Golden Compass, but I am fully sympathetic and in favor or your unabashed bibliophilia.

I'm with you and Meredith on not seeing movies based on books I care about, but for me it's as much or more about current reading as childhood favorites.

I felt the same way about the fact that they made a movie of "The Dark is Rising" (and what's up with NOT calling it The Dark is Rising?). When I actually saw a preview I was even more horrified because it was not at all like the book; and I just re-read it 3 years ago, so I'm not remembering it from 20 yrs back. While I didn't hate the movie "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" it definitely didn't remind me of the book I fondly remember as the first that opened up my eyes to the wonders of reading.

I think from now on, I will skip any movie made from a book that I fondly remember from childhood. I don't want to lose those pictures in my head of the scenery and what the characters looked and sounded like.
